Mining Weighing Solutions

  • Belt Scale — Conveyor Weighing A belt scale is essential for managing efficient bulk mining processes. BLH Nobel’s belt scale solution monitors raw material feed in crushers, mills, screens, and preparation plants. Unlike other belt weighing suppliers, BLH Nobel applies the weighing solution to the entire conveyor, delivering accuracy independent of belt stretch or wear. A typical installation uses four KIS-8 weigh modules per scale section, a junction box, and a G5 instrument for precise monitoring.
  • Mining Transport — Onboard Weighing BLH Nobel’s onboard weighing solution measures the load directly on transport equipment during loading, enabling a controlled process. This reduces wear and tear, extends hauler life span, optimizes loading and transport cycles, and improves cost control. The KIS load cells offer extreme accuracy with simple installation—making them the preferred choice for mining transport applications.
  • Skip Weighing — Shaft & Surface Haulage Skips can be used to haul ore at ground level or hoisted up a shaft. BLH Nobel’s skip weighing solution uses several KIMD-1 weigh modules to provide high-accuracy production volume data. Weighing the actual skip load delivers far greater accuracy than measuring engine current. An additional feature monitors wear on protective plates, giving full control to prevent overload situations.
  • Process Weighing & Batching for Ore Enrichment Flotation is the most common method for separating valuable minerals from less-valuable material. BLH Nobel’s batching systems handle recipe management, flow measurement, and level indication for vessels and hoppers. Loss-in-weight systems provide continuous weighing during filling and emptying—ensuring precise feeding of process materials and consistent product quality.

Core Capabilities Built for Extreme Environments

BLH Nobel load cells deliver the highest accuracy in the market, giving mining operators full control over every measurement point in their operation.

  • Patented KIS Double-Cantilever Shear Beam Design The KIS load cell’s circular, symmetrical measuring element with its patented concentric sleeve ensures loads align with the strain gauges. This design maintains accurate, stable measurements even under 100% side load conditions—rejecting errors from thermal expansion, vibration, and structural deflection.
  • High-Accuracy Strain Gauge Load Cells BLH Nobel’s foil strain gauge load cells are NTEP and OIML approved, delivering the precision required for trade-certified weighing in demanding mining applications. Capacities range from 10 kN to 1000 kN depending on model.
  • ATEX & IECEx Certified for Hazardous Area Weighing Mining environments often require equipment certified for explosive atmospheres. The KIS-1, KIMD-1, and KIMD-6 load cells are available in ATEX, IECEx, FM, and CSA certified versions—suitable for hazardous area weighing throughout the mine.
  • Extreme Durability & Corrosion Resistance Built from carefully selected quality steels, BLH Nobel products withstand humidity, temperature extremes, corrosive acids, industrial detergents, and abrasive mineral dust. IP68 and IP69K sealing is available across the product range.
  • Seamless System Integration BLH Nobel offers a wide variety of communication protocols for integration within complex production lines. The G5 Instrument provides state-of-the-art process monitoring, and dedicated weighing modules are available for direct integration with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix chassis.
  • Complete Weighing Systems & Turnkey Service Each custom solution draws on over 40 years of engineering expertise across thousands of successful applications. Service teams provide continuous field service, calibration kits, pocket calibrators, and diagnostic tools.

Answering Your Critical Mining Weighing Questions

How to Choose the Right Load Cell for Your Mining Application?
Selecting the right load cell depends on capacity requirements, environmental conditions, and the type of measurement needed. For mining transport and belt scales, BLH Nobel’s KIS-8 weigh modules offer a compact, high-accuracy solution. For skip weighing and high-capacity applications up to 1000 kN, the KIMD-1 is purpose-built for harsh shaft environments. For force measurement and overload protection, the KIMD-6 provides a rugged design in capacities from 10 to 200 kN. All models are available with ATEX certification for hazardous areas. The key factors to evaluate are: operating capacity and load range, exposure to side forces and vibration, corrosion and temperature conditions, and whether certification for explosive atmospheres is required.

What Keeps My Belt Scale from Providing the Accuracy I Need?
Common accuracy issues with belt scales include belt stretch and wear, misalignment of idler rollers, material buildup on the belt, and vibration from surrounding equipment. Most belt weighing suppliers only weigh a short section of the belt, making them sensitive to these variables. BLH Nobel takes a different approach: the weighing solution is applied to the entire conveyor, which means the measurement performs independently from the stretch level of the belt. Combined with regular calibration using BLH Nobel’s calibration kits and diagnostic tools, this approach delivers accuracy that conventional belt scales cannot match.

What Weighing System Works Best for Underground Mining?
Underground mining presents unique challenges: confined spaces, shaft hoisting, explosive atmosphere risk, and extreme mechanical stress. BLH Nobel’s skip weighing solution—using KIMD-1 weigh modules mounted along the shaft—provides high-accuracy production volume measurement that is far more reliable than indirect methods like motor current measurement. For underground conveyors, KIS-based belt scales can be installed in tight spaces thanks to their low-profile design. All critical underground models are available in ATEX and IECEx certified versions for safe operation in hazardous areas.
